The IMDT Dog Breeding course provides you with the required officially recognised, Ofqual regulated, Level 3 qualification covering Canine Care and Welfare in the breeding environment

Via successful completion of this course, you will have achieved the legally required qualification to present to Local Animal Welfare Officers but more importantly, you will be playing an active part in the drive to ensure that the future breeding of dogs is governed by responsibility, compassion and up to date knowledge.

Open to all over the age of 16 years wishing to achieve the Higher Standards Licensing for the breeding of dogs.
Upon successful completion you will receive an
IMDT certificate of completion and an Ofqual certificate for your records, and to show your local council Animal Welfare Officer who will be issuing your licence. You will also receive the official ‘Awarded Regulated Qualification in Dog Breeding’ logo to display on all marketing and supporting materials.
This 2-month correspondence course is designed to specifically satisfy the new licencing requirements for those wishing to achieve the Higher Standard recognition in canine welfare, set out in the Animal Welfare Licensing guidelines.

Duration: 2 months

Animal Activity Licensing Regulations
This course has its basis in ‘The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2020 Guidance notes for conditions for breeding dogs’.
The course is made up of two Units: Unit 1 Welfare and Professional Standards and Unit 2 Care and Professional Standards
Unit 1 requires approximately 30 hours study
Unit 2 requires approximately 50 hours study
The course totals 80 hours of study, with a guideline of 10 hours study per week to complete the course in 2 months. The course may be completed sooner if you have the time to study more.
When you book your course you will receive your Welcome email, a guide to the course and the course reading material and ‘Question and Answer’ workbooks for Unit 1 and 2.
Your tutor will be available by email throughout the duration of your course for any support and guidance needed
Unit 1 – Dog Breeding: Welfare and Professional Standards
The first Unit concentrates on the welfare of dogs who will be in the care of the breeder, whether these be adult, breeding, non-breeding, or puppies. You will need to show an:
- Understanding of how to provide a safe, suitable environment for canines.
- Understanding of how to provide a suitable diet and hygienic living conditions for canines.
Unit 2 – Dog Breeding: Care and Professional Standards
Unit 2 is concerned more directly with approaching dogs’ care and physical and mental wellbeing, understanding how they communicate and how they may display signs of discomfort, pain, stress, fear, and anxiety and most importantly what you can do to avoid these issues, no matter what their age. You will need to show an:
- Understanding of how to monitor the behaviour and training of canines.
- Understanding of how to handle and manage interactions between canines and people.
- Understanding of how to protect canines from pain, suffering, injury, and disease.
4. Understanding of how to protect canines in an emergency situation.
5. Understanding of the regulations in relation to the advertisement and sales of puppies.
6. Understanding of how to provide a suitable environment for adult dogs and puppies.
7. Understanding of the healthcare and welfare requirements for pregnant, nursing bitches and puppies.
To complete this course, you will need access to a laptop or computer and the ‘Question and Answer’ documents need to be completed in Microsoft Word. We can convert PDF documents if required.
