ANIMAL INSIGHTS – What Training Other Species Can Teach Us
Designed for dog trainers, behaviour professionals, vet nurses and anyone interested in broadening their behavioural fluency, this course provides an inspiring, thought‑provoking exploration of how insights from other species can deepen and enrich the work we already do with dogs
This three‑hour online workshop offers dog trainers a fresh and engaging look at how working with a variety of species can broaden and refine the skills they already use with dogs
The course uses cross‑species examples to highlight universal principles of learning, motivation, environment design and reinforcement. By exploring how different species interact with their surroundings, respond to training setups and engage with foundation behaviours, trainers gain new angles on familiar concepts, helping them strengthen clarity, sharpen practical skills and refine their welfare‑centred training decisions
The workshop begins by exploring how stepping outside the canine world can expand a trainer’s behavioural toolbox. Seeing how horses, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, livestock and zoo species learn offers a unique opportunity to appreciate how small adjustments in setup, reinforcement or criteria can influence learning. This broader perspective helps trainers refine the way they design sessions, structure training plans and support both dogs and their carers
From there, the course moves through a series of practical, interconnected topics. Participants look at species‑specific enrichment and how it highlights the importance of meeting behavioural needs; classical conditioning and the role of predictable pairing in building emotional safety; reinforcement strategies and how delivery influences movement, confidence, and arousal; and the universal foundation skills of focus, follow, and stationing that appear across species. Cross‑species examples also make behavioural function concepts easier to recognise and apply in canine behaviour modification
The workshop is presented by Laura Ryder, a Behaviour Consultant, Trainer and Educator with experience across domestic, farm and zoo species. Laura’s cross‑species background offers dog trainers a rich, practical lens for refining observation, timing and training plan design by expanding the ways we can understand and support learning
