What difference between running a Scent work activity and understanding how to train Scent work?
Scent work is a fascinating combination of science, observation, training mechanics and problem-solving.
You'll discover what is really happening when a dog searches, how scent moves through an environment, why dogs behave differently around odour, and how you can use this knowledge to become an OCN Level 3 Accredited IMDT Scent Dog Instructor.

What You'll Learn
Presented by the hugely experienced Mustafa Ozmus, this five-day, hands-on course is designed to develop your knowledge and practical skills in Scent work, covering both theory and practical applications.
During the course, you'll build your knowledge and skills in:
Canine Olfaction & Scent Science
- Describe canine olfactory anatomy and capabilities
- Explain scent mechanics, including cones, airflow, evaporation and contamination
- Define target scent and understand imprinting principles
- Understand how environmental factors affect scent
Training Mechanics
- Understand training philosophy, including positive reinforcement, back-chaining and shaping
- Conduct safe and effective scent imprinting
- Shape clear and consistent final responses
- Develop criteria for progression and maintenance
Search Skills
- Learn how to teach container searches through systematic progression
- Read early behavioural changes indicating scent interest
- Plan effective hide placement, considering height, accessibility and airflow
- Understand exterior variables including terrain, wind and vegetation
- Implement systematic search patterns
- Introduce vehicle search protocols
- Work with multiple hides and varying levels of difficulty
Teaching & Troubleshooting
- Design structured nose work classes for different levels and abilities
- Diagnose and resolve common training issues
- Develop effective and engaging Scent work sessions for your clients
OCN Level 3 Accreditation
Gain your Scent Dog Instructor Accreditation
As part of your course, at no additional cost, you'll have the opportunity to complete your assessment to gain your OCN Level 3 Accreditation as an IMDT Scent Dog Instructor.
The IMDT is a Registered Learning Centre for the Open College Network, a nationally recognised education accreditation body.
IMDT Members
IMDT Members will also have the opportunity to add the IMDT Scent Dog Instructor Badge to their profile and update their completed courses listing.
This allows you to showcase your Scent Instructor credentials to potential clients.
A Practical, Hands-On Course
This course combines practical training sessions with indoor classroom learning.
During classroom sessions, your dog will need to be happy and comfortable resting in your vehicle.
Please do not bring your dog if they cannot be left alone in your vehicle or if you don't have a vehicle where they can safely rest.
An IMDT member of staff will monitor the dogs during these downtime periods.

That's absolutely fine!
You're welcome to attend without a dog and you will gain just as much from the course as you would if you brought one.

Course Details
Duration - 5 days
Course times - 9:00am – 3:00pm each day
Please aim to arrive at 8:45am on your first day.
An IMDT team member will be there to greet you, show you where to park, explain where your dog can have a comfort break and, most importantly, show you where to find the tea and coffee facilities!
Accreditation - OCN Level 3 Accredited Course
CPD - 30 Points
Certificate - At the end of your course, you'll receive your IMDT Course Attendance Certificate and the official OCN Accreditation certificate.
Scent Dog Instructor Badge – You will also receive the course logo for your marketing.

1. Confirmation Email
Once you've booked your course, you'll receive a Confirmation Email so you know your place is secured.
2. Welcome Email
Two weeks before your course, you'll receive a Welcome Email containing all the information you need.
Please make sure you read this email carefully, as it includes important information about your course.
3. Booked Within Two Weeks?
Don't worry!
If you book your course less than two weeks before the course date, your Welcome Email will be sent the day before your course.
You'll still receive everything you need to know.
4. Arrive & Get Started
Please arrive at 8:45am on the first morning.
An IMDT team member will be there to greet you and help you get settled.
5. Complete Your Course
Enjoy five days of practical learning, Scent work training and professional development.
6. Receive Your Certificate
After your course, you'll receive an email containing your IMDT Course Attendance Certificate.
